Reading

I have been a librarian, 4th, 6th 7th and 8th grade teacher. I have taught first grade for nine years😊

My Family:

I have been with my husband for 32 adventures years. He is a custom home builder in our community. Our daughter, Annie is a seventeen-year-old in the Hill City High School. She is learning to fly airplanes; furthermore, she is hoping to be a commercial pilot someday. She has been flying since she was twelve. She passed the FAA private pilot written exam July 30, 2021!

We have one adventurous dog named Jett.

I will guide and encourage your child to be the best he or she can be in the first-grade environment.

IN OUR SECOND WEEK OF LEARNING FROM HOME.

There is a “Bear Hunt” around town. Many parents are driving around town with their children looking for bears in windows or on mailboxes. This is a cute idea to help families get out of the home, stay in the car and spot bears. There is a cute book on youtube that you can listen to called Going on a Bear Hunt😊 Neighborhoods across the globe are putting stuffed bears in their windows and front lawns to give kids a safe game. As the book says “We’re not scared”.

So put a bear up at your businesses and/or homes if you can.

The Week of March 30, 2020.

Ms. Johnson (The other first grade teacher😊) and I are going to do week of March 23rd over again. So, MY ORIGINAL WEEK March 23rd that I put in each child’s binder will be for the week of March 23rd and 30th ,  and my original week of March 30th  will be for the weeks of April 6th and 13th.

  • Keep practicing high-frequency words
  • The Weeks of March 23rd and 30th spelling words: Root Words with Ed and Ing Endings and root words with er and ing endings.
  • Students will be able to go to spellingcity.com to practice these. Sometime in the two weeks have them take the spelling test if you can on spellingcity.com.
    • Lesson 26 from our Journeys textbook is mix, mixed, hop, hopped, hope, hoping, run, running, use, used. if you would like a textbook let me know.
    • Words to know will be, above, bear, even, pushed, studied, surprised, teacher, toward.
    • Phonemic Awareness/Phonics lesson I would have done the weeks of March 23rd/30th  goes something like this:
      • I would explain base/root Words (CVCe this is consonant vowel consonant with silent e at the end of a word. CVC is consonant vowel consonant) with ed or ing endings.

Rule: Ed can make 3 sounds at the end of a words, ed, t or d. If a root word ends in d or t then ed will say ed. If a root word ends in k, ck, c, f, s, x, p, sh, ch or ph the ed will make the t sound.

  • Guide your child to listen for and clap syllables. I usually say: I’ll say some words and clap their syllables. I will tell them to listen as I say “bike”. Bike has one syllable. Now listen: “biking”. Biking has two syllables (because bike has one vowel and ing (you can hear the short vowel I sound when you say it. Now Say shrugged. This word is one syllable because you do not hear the e sound in ed. It makes a d sound instead. Then I have them do one together. I say listen: barking How many syllables do you hear in the word barking? Two syllables. You can continue with them: parking (2 syllables), parked (1),

Showed (1), showing (2), studying (3) because the y makes a short I sound as in inch, pushed (1), pushing (2), surprised (2) and grabbed (1).

Rule to add ed or ing to a word that ends with a single consonant (one syllable), we first need to double the final consonant. Add another p to hop, and then write ed or ing. Remind your child to recognize base words with endings ed or ing.

Rule: For most words, add -ing with no changes. Rule 2: For words that end in silent (not pronounced) -e, drop the -e and add -ing. Rule 3: For one-syllable words that end in consonant–vowel–consonant (except x, w, and l), double the last letter and add -ing.

Parent Read Aloud:  You Choose

  • Students will listen to the words read correctly,
  • Ask and answer questions about text read aloud

The story this week in class would have been The Dot by Peter Reynolds. You can finda  read aloud on youtube of this story. If you did zoom with me last week, this is the story I did with my class. Then we did a kahoot over the book.

Vocabulary Strategies: figurative language Idioms If you try to unravel the meaning of an idiom word-for-word, it often makes little to no sense. No one is chasing a goose. According to Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms,

Classify and Categorize emotional words.

Comprehension: Understanding Characters Target Strategy: Summarize, Arthor’s purpose (inform, entertain or persuade the reader)

Story Elements: character, setting, events, problem, solution, theme (central message) When you read to your child, ask them who the main character is, what is the setting (time and place) etc…

Grammar: Contractions, punctuation and sentence fluency

  • Remind your child that pronoun takes the place of a noun (something they can touch, person, place or thing). Ex. personal (I, we, you, he, she, it, they), demonstrative (this, these, that, those), relative (who, which, that, as), indefinite (each, all, everyone, either, one, both, any, such, somebody), interrogative (who, which, what), reflexive (myself, herself), possessive (mine, yours, his, hers, etc…

Writing: Personal Narrative,  and Narrative (story)

MATH: Math Vocab: addended (5 +4), equation (5+4=9), sum. Fewer, less than, more or greater than, tallies, bar graphs, pictographs, tens and ones place, shapes that are 2  and 3 dimensional, skip counting by 2, 5, 10s, counting to 120,  more or less, symbolize(<,>,=),greater and less than or equal, compare. Between, inches, length, MEASURE, LENGTH UNIT, COMPARE, LARGEST, SHORTEST, LONGER, SHORTER,

Math: Topic 12 Indirect Measurement In lesson 12, students compare the length of two objects to determine which object is longer or shorter. They indirectly measure two objects by using a third object to compare them, such as a crayon or a piece of string. This is an application of the Transitive Property.

  • I will add more of Topic 12 to Pearson Realize. They will be able to take a test over topic. Your child should know how to get to Pearson Realize, but if they have forgotten, they can click on google chrome, then look for Pearson Realize. Click on it and it should take him/her to their page. Weeks of April 6th and 13th …Lesson 27 from our Journeys textbook, Spelling Words: hard, harder, hardest,  fast, faster, fastest, slow, slower, slowest, sooner. I will put assignments on spellingcity for the students to practice or keep doing what you are doing.
  • Words to know: always, happy, once, different, high, stories, enough, near
  • PHONICS: base words with er, est e(change y to i) and syllable ie.
  • base words with er, est. Spelling patterns y, ie.

The Y rule: When a root ends in y, change the y to i when adding a suffix (easy + est = easiest; happy + ness = happiness). Exceptions: Keep the y if a vowel comes before it (play + er = player; joy + ful = joyful). Keep the y if adding the suffix -ing (cry + ing = crying; study + ing = studying).

Phonemic Awareness Lesson I would have done with your child is as follows:

I would have said something like “Let’s play a clapping game.”  I say a word then I say it again. Then we clap the syllables together. Example: word is tighter Syllable is tigh er (2 syllables),Word is  clapping syllables clap ping (2), the word is longest the syllables long est (2), the word is longest; the syllables are long est (2). The word is taller; the syllables are tall er(2), the word is bedtime; the syllables are bed time (2), the word is worked; the syllable is worked.

You could say the SENTENCE

  • That was the funniest joke of all. 2. Pat is sillier than Bill. 3. The ride is bumpier than the other one. 4. Beth has the fanciest dress of all. 5. This is the sunniest day of the week. 6. Matt is angrier than his mom. 6. This is the chilliest day of all.
  • This will help you see if they understand the rule. You can also check to see how they sound out words 😊
  • Daily Proof Reading Practice: i. am going kamping (camping).
  • Writing: Opinion writing. Tell your child that today they will work to form and support an opinion. They will write sentences about whether or not parents or teachers are helpful and why. (I would have read “The Shoe Maker and the Elves” this week, then they would have to have an opinion about whether or not the elves in “The Shoe Maker and the Elves” are helpful )
  • Provide time for them to brainstorm ideas on what helpfulness means and discuss why or why not the elves, parents or teachers are helpful.
  • Guide to write topic sentence (opinion statement).
  • Ask the to provide specic details (facts) to support the opinion.
  • Encourage to use words because.
  • Then after three detal sentence, have them come up with a closing statement that retells the opinion sentence/statement using different words.
  • You can prompt the with do you think…., what do they do….? Why?

Math

Topic Time

Vocabulary: hour hand, hour, minute hand, minute, o’clock, half hour,

I will add an interactive textbook on Pearson Realize. I will have activities on Seesaw, they can go to time on ixl.com, there are so many activities you could do at home. I would have made a clock using a paper plate. I would have explained what a sundial is, different clocks from history etc…

Please check in with me😊 if you need ideas, have concerns or want to tell me good news….please share.

I will have weekly zoom meeting on Mondays and Thursdays. I will send invites to your emails.

I will have packets to pick up (if this works easier for you on Mondays) if working on all the websites works for you, then keep doing it. I am sending you my lesson, so you know what your child would be missing. If you have ideas to teach math, writing, reading then do it.

We can do this together to help make your child better at math, reading, writing, science, social studies, P.E., art etc…

Dear Classroom Families,

I have made a binder for each child in my classroom. I have added a personal note to each of my students. The next item is their Map scores and what they can work on in math and reading. I have had many parents contact me by text about their child falling behind. Therefore, I have added the NWEA/MAPS information.

In their binders, is a packet on shapes. I would have them do at least two or three pages a week. If they want to do more, let them. I would set aside at least twenty minutes of reading every day.

If you have ideas to help your child learn, please let me know what you are doing, so I can document this for the State. I have parents cooking with their children and talking about fractions. Some parents are having their children write to a neighbor, my address is 23969 Palmer Gulch Rd., or do research on kids national georgraphic.com.

I am sending home packets to help. I want your child to keep learning too😊 If you want to work out of our math book do it. You do not have to go in order. I hope we all can be creative….just remember to share with me what you are doing.

Enrichment options:

--on laptops, go to homepage, scroll down to story online. Have you child select a story. Then the book will be read to them. Have them tell you the character, setting, problem, 3 events, solution and theme of the story.

--the reading and math activities in IXL, some students are in grade 1, 2, and 3rd grade math

--the fluency math practice in Xtramath.com

Reading

Practice is key. You can’t do anything “wrong” as long as you are reading every day!

While reading, practice:

  • Making connections
  • Visualizing
  • Inferring
  • Predicting
  • Asking Questions
  • Identifying the main idea and supporting details
  • Identifying the main characters, setting, and major events (plot), solution and theme

Math

We do math a total of one hour a day. First, we learn a strategy, watch a video and/or practice as a whole group on a topic in math ex. Measurement. Telling time, fractions, then we do a way to learn it (worksheet, white board practice etc…, then to xtramath.com (takes 5 min. this is to practice math fluency (no help here, they need practice), next we go to ixl.com (whatever our age is, that is the number of problems we do) Then math center time… usually games. Then outside for recess! Below are ideas you could do in math. If you come up with your own ideas, please let me know.

Story problems (within three whole number whose sum is less than or equal to 20)

  • Add and subtract 20
  • Count to 120,
  • Compare two-digit numbers based on meanings of tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with >, =, <, add within 100
  • Use concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value
  • Tell time in hours and half-hour on analog and digital clock
  • (Geometry) Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g. triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g color, orientation, oval size) build and draw shapes,
  • compose 2 and 3 dimensional shapes, partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares

Writing

We write every day for 30 minutes. If you would like to have them write a personal narrative. Personal narratives are true stories about our real lives. We work on these for about a week at a time. We brainstorm ideas, start writing, finish rough draft, edit. I walk around and guide them in the writing process. I want them to get their ideas down, make sentences that make sense and use correct punctuation. They can use first, next, then. They can type on their laptops. Save to the computer or send it to me at [email protected]

Time to sit down and write will be crucial. Sight words should be spelled correctly. Students should make sure to write stories about their lives with the events in chronological order. (Please help them write complete, simple and complex sentences with Who, what, when, where, why) Please help your child sound out words. It is okay to help them spell correctly and/or sound out phonetically. REMEMBER, I want them to enjoy writing, and I do not demand perfection.

Homecoming is the week of Oct. 14th, more info later about dress up days….our class color is yellow  No school on Oct. 14th.

PICTURE DAY SEPTEMBER 20TH

2019-2020 School Year!

Welcome to First Grade! I am excited for school to begin, and I get nine months with each one of you. We are going to have a fabulous year learning and having fun! My name is Kim Johnson, and I have been in the Hill City School District since 2008-2009 school year.

I was raised and attended school in Rapid City, SD. I taught at Horace Mann Elementary and North Middle School in Rapid City for 10 years before moving to the Hill City School System. I was hired out of student teaching to be the librarian at Horace Mann. After two years of teaching and taking classes, I earned my endorsement to be a librarian. I taught Library Media for five years before moving to a fourth-grade position at Horace Mann.  In 2000, I started a Masters in Curriculum Instruction and in 2002 graduated. Then in 2002, my reading specialist classes began. In 2004, I was hired to teach 6th reading at North Middle School. I have loved and grown from my experiences in education.  I feel teaching is a hobby of mine. I love it!

I have a wonderful family. I am married to Russ Johnson. We have one amazing child and an adventurous  dog. Annie is a sophomore in the Hill City High School, and Jett is a rescue dog.  I love to teach, garden, and spend time with my students, husband, daughter, and friends.

First grade is an important school year and attendance is important. There are many new things to learn; therefore, we will have fun doing our learning together. Please continue to read and practice math at home; READING is THE BRIDGE THAT CONNECTS ALL THINGS TOGETHER! Bring a smile with you and be ready for a wonderful year!

See you soon,

Mrs. Kim Johnson
