Greetings Ranger Families,
What a wonderful start to the school year! I hope your family is settling into the school routine. We are so proud of our amazing Ranger families and grateful for the support you give our teachers, staff, and students. You are receiving this newsletter as you are either a parent, guardian, or a listed contact of an elementary student. If you would not like to receive these newsletters, please reply and I will remove your email from my list.
This year, Hill City Elementary’s Student Council is sponsoring a Pop Tab Contest! Please see the attachment for details. Pop tabs can be found on soup cans, pet food, vegetables, fruit cans, and so much more. Thank you for helping us support the Ronald McDonald House Charities in South Dakota! Pop tabs can be brought to the elementary office or given to Mrs. Weron.
Our students in kindergarten through fifth grade have been busy taking the NWEA assessments. These are given three times a year—at the beginning of school, before Christmas break, and at the end of the year. The results help teachers measure growth in math, reading, and language. You’ll receive your child’s report once testing is complete. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions.
The Hill City School District partners with the Department of Health each year to provide student health screenings. Screenings are offered for kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades, but parents may request them for other grades as well. If you do not want your child to participate, please notify the office. A fluoride wash option is also available—scan the QR code in the attachment to sign up. Please contact Mrs. Shelby with any questions.
On September 19th, students will vote for the new Student Council president, secretary, treasurer, and class representatives. Under the guidance of Mrs. Weron, participating in Student Council gives students valuable opportunities to practice leadership, public speaking, and peer advocacy.
A reminder: Playground supervision begins at 7:40 a.m. when buses arrive; please stay with your child if you arrive prior to playground supervision. After school, students may only play on the playground if a parent is present. Thank you for keeping your child’s teacher informed of any changes to after-school plans.
During the weeks of September 22nd and October 6th, Hill City Elementary will host NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and their Rise Up program. This program is designed specifically for students in grades K–6, with goals to:
- Educate about mental illness and wellbeing
- Normalize conversations around mental health, just as we do with physical health
- Provide positive coping skills
- Teach students how to help themselves or a friend
- Encourage students to identify a trusted adult they can talk to
Each month, we celebrate students with Caught Being Good and Student of the Month awards.
- Caught Being Good honors students for simple acts of kindness—helping a friend, holding a door, or going above and beyond. These students enjoy a popcorn (or cotton candy if they have braces) celebration and a bit of extra recess.
- Student of the Month recognizes students who are Responsible, Accepting of others, Neighborly, Growing Academically, Encouraging, Respectful, and show great Sportsmanship.
If you do not want your child’s photo taken during these recognitions (or at any school event), please let me know.

¡Este año, el Consejo Estudiantil de la Escuela Primaria Hill City está patrocinando un Concurso de Pestañas de Latas! Consulte el archivo adjunto para obtener más detalles. Las pestañas de aluminio se pueden encontrar en latas de sopa, alimentos para mascotas, verduras, latas de frutas y mucho más. ¡Gracias por ayudarnos a apoyar a Ronald McDonald House Charities en Dakota del Sur! Nuestros estudiantes de kínder a quinto grado han estado ocupados tomando las evaluaciones de NWEA.
