Greetings Ranger Families,

What a fantastic first day of school we had! It was wonderful to have our hallways and classrooms filled with Rangers again. Our teachers and staff did an amazing job preparing welcoming, engaging classrooms, and our students came ready to learn. Students did a great job following expectations, learning new routines, reconnecting with friends, and making new ones. We are off to an excellent start!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make our Open House and Grilling on the Green such a great evening. Thank you to PIPTO for sponsoring the event, the Hill City Volunteer Fire Department for grilling the hot dogs, and the Hill City Football Team for serving. We couldn't have asked for a better evening to meet our teachers, visit classrooms, catch up with old friends, and welcome new families to our Ranger community. We are so grateful for the people and organizations who support our students and school!

If you are receiving this email, you are officially on my new Ranger Roundup parent email list! I will use these emails throughout the year to share important information, reminders, celebrations, and upcoming events.  If you would prefer not to receive Ranger Roundups, simply reply to this email and I will remove your email address from the list.

The Department of Health Nurse will be at Hill City Elementary August 26–28 to conduct screenings for students in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades.  If you do not want your child to participate in the screening, please let your child's teacher know. Screenings begin tomorrow, August 26.  The screenings are as follows:

Students will soon begin NWEA assessments in reading and math. We complete these assessments three times each year:

• Beginning of the school year
• Before Christmas break
• End of the school year

Once testing is complete, reports will be sent home. NWEA results are a valuable tool that helps our teachers see each student's academic growth, celebrate areas of strength, and identify areas where additional support may be helpful. If you have questions when you receive your child's report or would like help understanding the results, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Please note that we will have NO SCHOOL September 4 and September 7 due to Labor Day.

Homecoming Week is September 21–25! More information will be coming soon. If you have never experienced a Hill City Homecoming, you are in for a treat—literally!  Homecoming is always a special week for our students, school, and entire community.

If you have a child of preschool age (3–5 years old) and have concerns regarding their development, speech/language, or English language development, please consider scheduling a preschool screening.  Screenings will be held September 2 by appointment only. Please call Mrs. Shelby at 605-574-3013 to schedule an appointment.

For the safety of our students, please do not pick up or drop off students on McGregor Street.  Please use the front of the school or the Boys & Girls Club parking lot, and have students use the designated crosswalk.  Crossing guards are on duty from 7:45–8:05 a.m. and 3:05–3:10 p.m. at the NE and NW corners of the elementary school.  Thank you for helping us keep our Rangers safe!

While school is in session, everyone entering the building must stop at the office. Please do not bypass the office, even if you are just dropping something off, picking something up, or making a quick visit.  Knowing who is in our building during the school day is an important part of keeping our students and staff safe. We appreciate your cooperation in following this procedure and helping us keep Hill City Elementary safe and secure.

Regular attendance is an important part of student success. If your child will be absent, please call Mrs. Shelby at 605-574-3013 to excuse the absence.

I love capturing the great moments of our Rangers throughout the school year—from classroom learning and special activities to Homecoming festivities and celebrations.  If you prefer that your child not be photographed, please let me know.

Each month, we recognize students through our Caught Being Good and Student of the Month awards.

• Caught Being Good recognizes the everyday acts of kindness that make Hill City Elementary such a great place—helping a friend, holding a door, including someone, or simply going above and beyond. These students enjoy a popcorn celebration (or cotton candy for our students with braces!) and a little extra recess.
• Student of the Month recognizes students who demonstrate what it means to be a RANGER:

R – Responsible
A – Accepting of Others
N – Neighborly
G – Growing Academically
E – Encouraging
R – Respectful
S – Sportsmanship

We love having opportunities to recognize our students for the many ways they make our school a better place!

Daily Schedule

• Kindergarten–2nd Grade: School begins at 7:55 a.m.; dismissal is at 3:05 p.m.
• 3rd–5th Grade: School begins at 8:00 a.m.; dismissal is at 3:05 p.m.
• Bus arrival and playground supervision begin at 7:40 a.m. If your child arrives earlier, please stay with them until staff members are present.
• Students attending the Boys & Girls Club should go directly to the Club after school unless they are accompanied by a parent/guardian on the playground.

Please make sure your child and their teacher knows the after-school plan each day. This helps dismissal run safely and smoothly.

Our Lost & Found is located in the elementary commons. With chilly mornings and warm afternoons, jackets and sweatshirts have a way of finding their way there!  Unclaimed items are donated in December and May.

Breakfast and lunch menus are available here: https://www.myschoolmenus.com/organizations/1098/  We encourage all families to complete a free/reduced meal application. If you need a form, please contact the office or stop by. The application is also available on the school website and is attached to this email.  Meal account balances can be paid in the office with Mrs. Shelby or by credit card through your Parent Portal account. If you don't remember your Parent Portal username or password, please call Mrs. Shelby and she can help reset it.

It's Going to Be a Great Year!  There is something special about the beginning of a new school year—the excitement of a fresh start, new opportunities, and all the possibilities ahead. We have an incredible group of students, dedicated teachers and staff, and wonderfully supportive families and community.  This year will be filled with learning, growth, friendships, celebrations, challenges, laughter, and plenty of Ranger memories. Our goal is for every child to feel safe, supported, challenged, and excited to come to school each day.

Thank you for trusting us with your children and for being such an important part of our Ranger family. We are excited for everything the 2026–2027 school year has in store!

¡Qué primer día tan fantástico de clases! Fue maravilloso tener nuestros pasillos y salones llenos de Rangers de nuevo. Nuestros maestros y personal hicieron un trabajo increíble preparando aulas acogedoras y atractivas, y nuestros estudiantes llegaron listos para aprender. Los estudiantes hicieron un gran trabajo siguiendo expectativas, aprendiendo nuevas rutinas, reconectándose con amigos y haciendo nuevos amigos. ¡Vamos con un excelente comienzo!

Un enorme GRACIAS a todos los que ayudaron a que Nuestro evento de Puertas Abiertas y Grilling on the Green fue una gran noche. Gracias a PIPTO por patrocinar el evento, al Departamento de Bomberos Voluntarios de Hill City por asar los hot dogs, y al equipo de fútbol americano de Hill City por su servicio. No podríamos haber pedido una mejor noche para conocer a nuestros maestros, visitar salones de clase, ponernos al día con viejos amigos y dar la bienvenida a nuevas familias a nuestra comunidad de guardabosques. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos con las personas y organizaciones que apoyan a nuestros estudiantes y a la escuela!

La enfermera del Departamento de Salud estará en la Primaria Hill City del 26 al 28 de agosto para realizar exámenes a estudiantes de Kindergarten, 1º, 3º y 5º grado.  Si no quieres que tu hijo participe en la evaluación, por favor informa a la maestra de tu hijo. Las proyecciones comienzan mañana, 26 de agosto.  Las proyecciones son las siguientes:

Pronto comenzarán las evaluaciones de la NWEA en lectura y matemáticas. Completamos estas evaluaciones tres veces al año:

• Inicio del año escolar
• Antes de las vacaciones de Navidad
• Fin del ciclo escolar

Una vez terminadas las pruebas, los reportes se enviarán a casa. Los resultados de NWEA son una herramienta valiosa que ayuda a nuestros maestros a ver el crecimiento académico de cada estudiante, celebrar áreas de fortaleza e identificar áreas donde un apoyo adicional puede ser útil. Si tienes preguntas cuando recibas el reporte de tu hijo o quieres ayuda para entender los resultados, no dudes en comunicarte.

¡La Semana de Homecoming es del 21 al 25 de septiembre! Próximamente habrá más información. Si nunca has experimentado un Homecoming en Hill City, ¡te espera un deleite—literalmente! 💚💛 El  Homecoming siempre es una semana especial para nuestros estudiantes, la escuela y toda la comunidad.

Si tienes un niño de 3 a 5 años y tienes preocupaciones sobre su desarrollo, el habla/lenguaje o el desarrollo del lenguaje inglés, por favor considera programar un examen para preescolar.  Las proyecciones se realizarán solo el 2 de septiembre con cita previa. Horario Diario

• Kínder–2º grado: La escuela comienza a las 7:55 a.m.; La salida es a las 3:05 p.m.
• 3º a 5º grado: La escuela comienza a las 8:00 a.m.; La salida es a las 3:05 p.m.
• La llegada en autobús y la supervisión del área de juegos comienzan a las 7:40 a.m. Si tu hijo llega antes, por favor quédate con él hasta que haya personal presente.
• Los estudiantes que asisten al Club de Niños y Niñas deben ir directamente al Club después de clases, a menos que estén acompañados por un padre o tutor en el patio de juegos.

Por favor, asegúrate de que tu hijo conozca su plan después de clases cada día. Esto ayuda a que la salida se realice de manera segura y fluida.

Nuestro Lugar Perdido y Encontrado está ubicado en el área común de la primaria. Con mañanas frías y tardes cálidas, ¡las chamarras y sudaderas tienen la manera de llegar ahí!  Por favor, revisa lo de Objetos Perdidos en cualquier momento. Los artículos no reclamados se donan en diciembre y mayo.

Hay algo especial en el inicio de un nuevo año escolar: la emoción de un nuevo comienzo, nuevas oportunidades y todas las posibilidades que tienen por delante. Contamos con un grupo increíble de estudiantes, maestros y personal dedicados, y familias y comunidad maravillosamente solidarias.

Este año estará lleno de aprendizaje, crecimiento, amistades, celebraciones, retos, risas y muchos recuerdos de los Rangers. Nuestro objetivo es que cada niño se sienta seguro, apoyado, retado y emocionado de venir a la escuela cada día.

Gracias por confiarnos con sus hijos y por ser una parte tan importante de nuestra familia de Rangers. ¡Estamos emocionados por todo lo que el ciclo escolar 2026–2027 nos deparará!
